Tiny House (40m2)

Goal was to create tiny houses in Philips Dorp, an area rich in history and social awareness. The homes were developed for refugees with residencies to help them start their new lives.

Solutions

Identifying 5 main countries of origin for refugees in the Netherlands, I researched their local architecture and design elements. The wind towers in the Middle East were the inspiration for the design, their wellknown vertical lines recreated by wood panels placed in front of large glass windows, creating a light open space. The openness is enhanced by ensuring no high walls inside obstruct the views. To ensure privacy in the bedroom and bathroom, those elements are placed below ground level. Clever planting of shrubs outside ensures that no infringement of privacy can take place.
The natural colour palette makes the green of the outside ‘flow’ inside and a few key styling elements like the kitchen tiles and the carpet refer to the Middle East.
