Public Bath

My graduation project was to change the purpose of our school building to a public bath.

Solutions

Analysis of the origin/evolution of a public bath; the location in which the concept would be implemented (relatively high % of immigrants) and the social developments led to my design of a Turkish hamam.

I created “Puur”(Dutch for “Pure”). The spatial design was focused on providing an authentic hamam experience by: logical routing, the presence of authentic elements like the Gobektasi and the Kurnas. The modern window panels provide privacy, daylight in a playful way and are a reference to Middle Eastern culture.

The styling of the project is done in a modern minimalistic way to serve two purposes: firstly to endorse the concept (Pure: no frills) and secondly to make the unknown more accesible. This was done by a very serene colour palette of white with some hints of colours to reflect the cultural heritage of the hamam. Modern day materials like Corian, cast flooring, glass, contemporary fabrics and sleek design of authentic elements further enhance the concept.
